Dr. Nightingale Honoured With Prestigious Tourism Award

Please join Vancouver AM as they host the 24th Annual Wake-Up Awards on Friday, May 30th at the Pan Pacific Vancouver Hotel. For over two decades the Wake-Up Awards have acknowledged those individuals who “Wake Up” tourism in Vancouver. This year the Award recognizes Dr. John Nightingale and the work he has accomplished as head of the Vancouver Aquarium.

Nature is his passion, and its conservation is his life-long work. Dr. Nightingale provides nearly 25 years experience and education in the industry stemming from his broad educational and professional background in aquatic sciences specializing in the communication of conservation and science for public awareness and education.

Nightingale joined the Vancouver Aquarium in 1993. Since then, he’s guided the expansion of the Aquarium's leadership in conservation research, while focusing operations on maintaining its financially self-supporting status.

His experience also includes curating living animal collections to developing strategic and physical plans for both new and existing institutions, to managing all aspects of aquarium development and operation. A professional biologist and bio-engineer with "hands-on" experience, Nightingale has been responsible for the development and operations of some of the best life support and animal care systems in operation. Nightingale has led the management and development of new institutions including the Oregon Coast Aquarium and Maui Ocean Center and has maintained existing facilities such as the New York and Seattle Aquariums.

One of the Vancouver Aquarium’s signature conservation programs is Ocean Wise - created to help restaurants and their customers make environmentally-friendly seafood choices. Look for the Ocean Wise symbol on menus at participating restaurants. It means a seafood dish has been guaranteed ocean-friendly by the Vancouver Aquarium.

Nightingale's educational background includes a Bachelor of Arts degree in biology from Eastern Oregon State College, a Master of Science degree in fisheries biology and Doctorate in Physiology from the University of Washington. He has also completed post-graduate studies in business administration at Seattle University.
